Providence Church West Chester Family Covenant

The following list of ‘Family Commitments' are not things to achieve in order to become a member, rather they are things that Providence Church expects are present in those who are already actively pursuing a relationship with Christ, viewing themselves as His adopted children and part of His local church family here at Providence Church.

In response, agreeing to and coming under this family covenant, I agree to the following commitments:

As a committed member of the family of Providence Church, I first acknowledge my belief and faith commitment to Jesus Christ as my only Savior and Lord. I believe the Bible is God’s inspired and inerrant Word for us, and I promise to submit to the authority of Scripture in every facet of my life. Through submission to the power of the Holy Spirit, I will pursue holiness both privately and publicly through regularly practicing spiritual disciplines such as Bible reading, prayer and fellowship. Acts 2:38-41, John 1:12-13, Mark 16:16, Galatians 5:13-26, Romans 8:1-13, Colossians 2:6; 3:17; 4:2, Titus 1:15-16, 1 John 5:1-5, 1 Peter 2:2

As a committed member of the Providence Church family, I am in agreement with and understand the core beliefs and values of Providence Church and will seek to uphold and defend them. In any areas of disagreement I may have with the core beliefs (determined by the Governing Elders), I agree to avoid being divisive and uphold the principle of unity and peace. Colossians 2:8, 1 Thessalonians 2:15, 1 Timothy 1:19.

As a committed member of the Providence Church family, I will regularly attend the Sunday gatherings of Providence Church and my particular Life Group. I promise to prioritize these gatherings in a way that clearly upholds the spirit of Hebrews 10:24-25, which says: “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

As a committed member of the Providence Church family, I understand the mission of the local church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ (Mt. 28:18-20, Acts 1:8). Therefore, I will take responsibility not only for my own discipleship (becoming more like Jesus) but for my role in helping others be discipled. I commit to active participation in Providence’s discipleship process through training (i.e., Discover Prov, EHS, EHR, etc.), service, and as the Spirit leads, by engaging those outside the church with the Gospel through my words and actions. Acts 2:42-47, 2 Timothy 2:2, Hebrews 3:12-15.

The Bible teaches that those belonging to God’s family have been entrusted with spiritual gifts and financial resources for the edification of the Body, the spread of the gospel, and the glory of God (1 Peter 4:10-11; 2 Corinthians 9:6-9). Therefore, I commit to serving the church in a way that is consistent, voluntary, and sacrificial. Similarly, I commit to giving financially toward the work of the church regularly, joyously and sacrificially. Mark 10:45, Acts 2:42-47, 2 Corinthians 8-9, 1 Peter 4:10.

As a committed member of the Providence Church Family, I am committed to sharing my struggles with pastors, my life group, and other leaders in order to find strength, care, healing, and accountability in following Jesus. As a member of the Providence family, I am committed to receiving accountability and, if necessary, correction from leadership and my church family if I persist in sin without seeking grace and transformation. All church accountability is done out of love for the purpose of restoration and growth (Mt. 18:15-20; Hebrews 13:17).
